What is Mother's Day?
Mother's Day is a traditional holiday for many countries around the world. There is no fixed anniversary like International Women's Day 8/3 so many people often don't know what Mother's Day is.
As a rule, this special holiday takes place on the second Sunday of May. Thus, Mother's Day 2019 is May 12, 2019.
The origin and meaning of Mother's Day
Vietnamese folk has a folk song: "A father-in-law like Thai Son mountain / Mother's meaning like water flowing out of the source", the mother always has a special role for every human being. Around the world, there are millions of people who are mothers and for each child, the mother is always the one we love, appreciate and cherish the most.
Therefore, Mother's Day was born that helped every child have the opportunity to express your love for your mother. On this day, the beautiful values of the mother are reminiscent and glorified: sacrifices for children, considerate care, teaching children, altruism or undying love, …
The history of Mother's Day is closely linked to the history of forming an ancient totalitarian state and human development. This holiday originated in ancient Greek and Roman times. The festival of gratitude for the motherhood is held annually in the spring and the Greeks at that time often sacrificed to the goddesses, especially the god of Rhea - Mother of many gods in Greek mythology.
Another document suggests that the origin of Mother's Day first appeared in England around 1600. This day is held every year, before Easter 40 days to express gratitude to the mother. On the mother's day, the children often have the custom of giving flowers or fruit cakes to their beloved mothers. However, this custom gradually fell into oblivion in the nineteenth century.
In the United States, thanks to the patience of fighting and the heart of a girl named Anna Jarvis in Philadelphia, USA, Mother's Day became an official holiday. After her mother died, Anna was tormented by the many things that had not been done for her, and by the indifferent attitude of the American people towards their mother. She was determined to fight for the US Senate to organize Mother's Day nationwide.
After years of struggle, in 1911, Mother's Day was agreed to be held in most states in the United States. On May 8, 1914, the US president signed a decision to set the second Sunday of May every year as Mother's Day.
Since then, Mother's Day has been celebrated in many countries around the world on the 2nd Sunday of May.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers of the world!
